I’m trying to create a report to display value for landing pages (8/8/2013 Tip of the Day) and I can’t find a way to bring up the metric Entrances for the Dimension Landing Page.
Has that option been removed, or is my inexperience showing?
Thanks.
Cathy, Entrances is still avaialable as a metric (in the Content grouping) for your custom report, but invididual metrics and dimensions are hard to find in the long list. If you know what you’re looking for, it’s usually easier to use the type-ahead field at the top of the dimension/metric popup.
Glad you’re trying out the custom report, and hope this helps!
Hello Eric,
if I have an inbound link that links to a URL like this:
http://www.sample.com/?r=fik
do I lose juice for the URL
http://www.sample.com
or Google understands that this is not a different URL but it’s just a querystring for tracking purpose?
thanks in advance
Freddie
Freddie, good question. It is in fact a good idea to use Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) to tell Google explicitly which URL parameters are and are not significant in identifying pages that contain different content and should therefore be indexed separately.
First step: make sure that you have GWT set up. Very easy process.
Once the Crawl > URL Parameters report within GWT is populated, click Edit/Reset for the r parameter (in the example you provided), and select *No: Doesn’t Affect Page Content*.
Another approach is to use the canonical tag (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/canonical-link-tag/) – this will have the same effect for URL consolidation in Google.
Also, it looks like Bing has a URL Normalization tool that is the equivalent of the Crawl > URL Parameters settings in GWT: http://www.bing.com/blogs/site_blogs/b/webmaster/archive/2012/04/27/better-than-canonical-url-normalization.aspx
Hope this helps.
Eric
